This is probably the first book that I've read where I disliked all the characters and yet still enjoyed the book. Not being attached to any of the characters helped me sit back and just enjoy watching this family unravel. The sharp and witty writing also helped to keep me engaged and entertained by the story. I would recommend this for anyone who also finds themselves weirdly fascinated by dysfunctional families! This is probably the first book that I've read where I disliked all the characters and yet still enjoyed the book. I was completely fascinated by Knight's story because who hasn't ever thought about escaping from the world for a few days (or longer)? However, I did finish the book feeling frustrated because I never got to the point where I really understood Knight's mindset or his motivations for living the way he did. I do think Finkel did an admirable job in reporting the story and making it as engaging as possible but was simply prevented from going any deeper due Knight's unwillingness to share more. This would be a great pick for any book group because it is sure to generate lots of thoughtful discussion.I was completely fascinated by Knight's story because who hasn't ever thought about escaping from the world for a few days (or longer)? I absolutely loved the first book in the Lady Sherlock series and it ended up being one of my favorite books of 2016. I was thrilled to have a chance to delve into A Conspiracy in Belgravia and overall found it to be another enjoyable read. My main quibble with this one was there were too many different things going on at once with the missing brother, the coded telegram, the marriage proposal, the possible poisoning, Livia’s mysterious man, the introduction of Moriarty, etc. I was a little confused for a good half of the book about what the main mystery was because none of these happenings were getting any more attention than the others. Of course, Thomas manages to show how a lot of these are related by the end, but it was rather overwhelming for a while. That being said, the rich details, the fantastic characters, and the fun spin on the classic Sherlock Holmes universe still made for a delightful read. There were a lot of loose threads at the end of this second book and I can’t wait to see what Thomas does with them in book #3!I absolutely loved the first book in the Lady Sherlock series and it ended up being one of my favorite books of 2016. I really enjoyed this book but I would caution readers that it is waaaay different from the first book in the series. The time travel aspect that was introduced in the first book comes into play in a major and unexpected way in this one (I can’t say much more without giving anything away, sorry!). The romance between Emmeline and Lord Silverton continues and evolves which was my favorite part of the novel. I have no idea what is going to happen with book 3, but can’t wait to see where Juliana Gray takes this story!I really enjoyed this book but I would caution readers that it is waaaay different from the first book in the series. I loved this story and gobbled it up in one sitting. At first glance, this seems like a guilty pleasure read because it was centered around the repercussions of a political sex scandal. And the novel was witty and engaging, but it was also smart and had deep themes of family, friendship, feminism, and strength. The story is told in five parts, each told by a different woman with a distinct voice. I loved how Zevin experimented with different storytelling devices such as an email exchange with an Indonesian pen pal and a fun ‘Choose your own adventure story’ format. Even though I felt the novel did end at the right moment, I couldn’t help wanting to hear more from each of these fascinating women.I loved this story and gobbled it up in one sitting. This is a book about books interspersed with stories from the life of an avid reader. It's a perfect book for any bibliophile because you will find yourself nodding along with all her comments about the wonderful smell of new (and old) books, the inability to pick just one book at a bookstore, the never ending piles of to be read books and the overall joy reading brings. Considering that this was written by the editor of the New York Times Book Review, I appreciated how utterly unsnobbish Paul was about books and was willing to read and admit to reading all types of books. My only complaint was that I wish there was more. There were parts of her life that were mentioned only in passing and I would have enjoyed hearing more about her family life and a lot more about her very cool job! This is a book about books interspersed with stories from the life of an avid reader. I have a hard time saying that I liked this book, because it was 400 pages of doom and gloom, but I did find it super fascinating. It was an accessible read and I appreciated how Moore stayed away from going overly detailed in the legal descriptions and medical jargon. Instead, she focused on the women and their families. She was very detailed in describing their pre-poisoning lives, their deterioration, money problems, and unbelievable perseverance in fighting for justice. She presents these ladies as ordinary, relatable women who had something horrible to them. I had no trouble connecting with them and feeling sympathetic to their plight. A note of warning, Moore holds nothing back in describing the deterioration of these women’s bodies.I have a hard time saying that I liked this book, because it was 400 pages of doom and gloom, but I did find it super fascinating. This was my first time reading Roxane Gay and I was completely blown away by the quality of her writing. These short stories are raw, beautiful, and tough. All of the women in her stories have been (or continue to be) a victim of something horrible and they are all dealing with the aftermath in their own way. I appreciated how very different each of these women were and I think any reader would have no trouble finding at least one of these women relatable. These are stories that I won’t get out of my head for a long time. This was my first time reading Roxane Gay and I was completely blown away by the quality of her writing.
