I came for the botany and stayed for the survival story -- loved how she paired the botanical descriptions with her story of survival, and love how she portrays complicated people with great compassion. She was taught to survive the wilderness during Armageddon but ultimately used her own critical thinking to apply that knowledge so she could survive her family until she could escape from them. I really appreciate that this isn't graphic, it's not the train-wreck kind of narrative that is so horrible you can't look away from. It's a story of survival, not of victimhood.I came for the botany and stayed for the survival story -- loved how she paired the botanical descriptions with her story of survival, and love how she portrays complicated people with great compassion. Local author Anise Vance's page-turning novel asks the question, how far are you willing to go for justice?
I never wanted this book to end. I want to stay with these characters, to know where they will go next.
The characters—Jeremiah, Nova, Quinn, Malik, Zahra—come together in a chorus of voices giving words to the internal conflict all revolutionaries must feel. Each voice felt so real. The plot flowed along in a torrent and I hated to put it down!
I recommend this novel to fans of literary fiction with compelling plot, thought-provoking stories that ask questions with no easy answers, and readers who love strongly written, relatable characters.Local author Anise Vance's page-turning novel asks the question, how far are you willing to go for justice?

I am in love with this book! I'll be honest, I picked it up because it's by Mary J Blige, but I didn't expect to be blown away--a lot of celebrity children's books fall a little short. But this is so wonderful and has a simple, empowering message for every child. Be sure to read the letter to readers in the back--it puts the cherry on top.I am in love with this book! I'm amazed how different Roth's recent works have been--all dystopian, but all so unique from each other and also everything else on the market. I love how Arch-Conspirators pairs an ancient world with future dystopia to create a haunted, haunting world that forms the perfect backdrop for a retelling of the tragedy of Antigone.I'm amazed how different Roth's recent works have been--all dystopian, but all so unique from each other and also everything else on the market. I loved this book because it's full of concrete activities to do with one's children at all different age levels, including mock conversations to give us language we might use to discuss social justice issues with them. It’s fascinating to read about how cults use language in certain ways to manipulate followers into doing dangerous and harmful things, and how other groups like fitness brands and politicians use the same techniques to manipulate their followers for personal gain, though obviously not to the same extreme ends. I also really appreciated that she didn’t demonize or dehumanize the people who are influenced by these cults (or brands or so on), but rather inspires empathy and understanding for them. Definitely a great read to help us understand how we too might be influenced by these language techniques in order to make us more conscientious consumers of information. It’s fascinating to read about how cults use language in certain ways to manipulate followers into doing dangerous and harmful things, and how other groups like fitness brands and politicians use the same techniques to manipulate their followers for…

I appreciate the practicality of this book. I found it much more grounded in concrete practices and activities than Dr. Kendi's How to Raise an Anti-Racist, which stayed more at the level of ideas.

It's no wonder Tor picked up this indie title. It's got a succubus who doesn't want to seduce anyone, an orc who wants to lay down her arms, a mysterious malefactor (or maybe not?) who loves a good cinnamon roll, a purring direcat, and a coffee-drinking gnome who may or may not be a time traveler. Any one of those things would make me pick up this book, and it's got all of them plus more to boot.
It's funny, wholesome, sweet, and compelling. There's tension, just the right amount of danger, real emotion, and even a tiny dash of romance. If you're looking for a fun, light read that will make you want to forget your responsibilities to finish the book in one go, this is it.It's no wonder Tor picked up this indie title. As a first time pregnant mom, I found this book refreshing in the field of parenting and childbirth books currently out there. Conaboy dives into the nuance and detail of what is actually happening to our brains while we are pregnant and parenting, including non-birthing partners, support network members who help caregive, and pregnant people who are trans or nonbinary. I have heard the many comments she seeks to debunk or add nuance to--that my brain will inevitably be deficient during this time; that my maternal instincts will guide me more than any book, friend, or professional; that pregnancy is so special, motherhood nearly divine. I really appreciate Conaboy's honesty about her own experiences, combined with her journalistic investigation into the actual science behind our brain chemistry and pregnancy and parenting. Equally affirming about my own experiences, and enlightening about the ways non-birthing partners and support network members are changed by parenting, I really appreciated this book coming when it did in my own parenting journey. I feel better prepared and reassured. As a first time pregnant mom, I found this book refreshing in the field of parenting and childbirth books currently out there. I love this beautiful book about the African diaspora that celebrates the strong history while not shying away from discussing slavery and colonialism in a child-friendly way.

Such a compelling read! I tore through this book. It's bleak and spare while still remaining hopeful (how did she do that?) and gently guides the reader into deep thinking alongside the main character as she begins to question everything around her.
Formerly the literal Poster Girl for the Delegation, a fascist government that gamifies compliance through mass surveillance and rewards for desirable behaviors, now Sonya Kantor is in prison under the new regime, the Triumverate. But when she gets the chance to go free--if she completes a seemingly impossible task--she embarks on an investigation that reveals troubling truths about both the Delegation and the Triumverate--and gives Sonya the chance to decide who *she* is--not who she was raised to be--and what she's willing to stand up for.
My favorite thing about Roth's recent book Chosen Ones is echoed here--the way she takes a common trope and then explores the shadow side of it. With Chosen Ones, we saw what happens to the famous Chosen teenagers coping with trauma and fame after the battles are won. With Poster Girl, we see the background character brought to the fore, the villain's pawn becomes the protagonist and we see the history and the aftermath from a totally new perspective.Such a compelling read! I loved the focus on the interplay between personal and societal transformation, and the emphasis on aligning our means with our ends, so that we are building the world we want to live in. I appreciate her humility and honesty in showing how she has struggled with some of these attitudes and practices, and still does--I'm sure these are skills we could work on our whole lives and still slip from time to time. Aside from the occasional mentions of Cullors' work and beliefs, I think most people will agree with the actual practices and attitudes recommended in the 'twelve steps,' regardless of personal viewpoints on her work. The audiobook reader is great, and features a conversation between the author and adrienne maree brown at the end--definitely worth a listen!I loved the focus on the interplay between personal and societal transformation, and the emphasis on aligning our means with our ends, so that we are building the world we want to live in. Maria Tatar's book was a revelation and a vindication.
After reading Joseph's Campbell's The Hero with A Thousand Faces, I felt uneasy--I had always assumed 'hero' was used in the 'hero's journey' as a gender neutral term, in the old-fashioned way that 'he' or 'mankind' was used as the default to mean 'anyone' or 'everyone.' When I actually went to the source, it was pretty clear that women could not be heroes. We were relegated by Campbell to be prizes, obstacles, or helpers to the male hero.
In Tatar's compulsively readable analysis, she shows that in their own unique way, women's stories can rewrite narratives--and society. Once relegated by Campbell and male-dominated societies to the world of 'fairy tales' and 'old wive's tales'--in other words, to women's circles only--Tatar reveals that the structures and tropes Campbell espoused as universal are only one side of the story and one particularly masculine narrative structure. Tatar's work shows us that heroines have always been prevalent in our narratives, and when we give them their due consideration, they provide clues and guides for how to seek justice, how to live with compassion and intelligence, and how to tell stories that are empowering and subversive.Maria Tatar's book was a revelation and a vindication.
