Good grief. This is not about eccentricity, it's about mentally ill people who are being exploited for the amusement of other people! I would not recommend this film to anyone, it's morally repulsive.

A riches-to-rags story of eccentric mother and daughter stretching over four decades. Supposedly, the film shows a hatching of a new American myth, but they simply turn into a fun-loving mother and daughter.

Riches do not consist in the possession of treasures, but in the use made of them. Napoleon Bonaparte

A lot if the reviews here are of the 1970’s documentary film. This film is a biopic of the life of the two Beal women before and after the events depicted in the documentary. I’d recommend watching the doc first, things will make much more…

These ladies were exploited. They are clearly so mentally ill that I doubt they realize they are being made a spectacle of. For the same reason we don't have sideshow freaks, this shouldn't have been made and really needs to be pulled from…

Watch the original documentary. I do not see the value added to this "remake".

I saw this film years ago. It illustrates how a person can allow a property to sink into a state of chaos, uncleanliness, and disrepair. Interesting but may reflect psychological problems in the two women.

I don't know how I lived my whole life thus far, without encountering this bizarre documentary. I couldn't tear my eyes away. Fascinating and a little sad.

Documentary referred to in movie. Relationships with camera operators. Excellent view of who they are daily.

Outstanding although suspect documentary about a mother and daughter, relatives of Jackie Kennedy, who lived with little human contact in their decrepit, dirty mansion in East Hampton for many years. It appeals to the voyeur in all of us.…

A strange, at moments funny, but mostly sad and unnerving documentary about a mother and daughter handcuffed to the past and one another. Forget about the faded wealth and connection to the super-famous, this film is really a meditation…

Completely alienating for the viewer. The maximally dysfunctional and degenerate are neither amusing, instructive, or sympathetic. Or that different from their famous relatives. The Maysles made some very good movies, most of them about…

There's the documentary with the actual Beales and there's this movie with Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore playing the actual Beales and they're much more engaging. The Big Edie and Little Edie Beale were cousins of Jackie Kennedy who …

Edie's eccentricities make her easy to adore. Love her.

I cannot give enough praise to Jessica Lange's and Drew Barrymore's spectacular performances in their portrayals of the Beals. Spot on. Do yourself a favour and watch the Grey Gardens documentary first.

This was a completely boring and dull documentary about two mentally unbalanced women. Not worth watching.

One of the greatest documentaries ever made hands down. This watershed film has influenced so many of the docs we see today. Still one of the most compelling stories. The directors Albert and David Maysles brothers follow two eccentric…

Absolutely mesmerizing documentary of the Beales: 'Big Edie' Bouvier Beale, and daughter, 'Little Edie,' who happen to be related to Jacqueline Bouvier (Kennedy/Onassis). I felt somewhat like a voyeur watching these two pathetic women who…

Grey Gardens is a striking documentary, which not only reveals the darker side of life in the American Aristocracy, but too unravels the complex issues of mental health before it became mainstream in popular series such as those showcasing…

An important documentary for any gay man's repertoire- two matriarchs of the Kennedy clan , a mother and daughter, living in the fading glory of the past in a decrepit East Hampton mansion with raccoons and a family of cats. Something…

Gosh, I thought these two ladies would be eccentric in a good way, perhaps an artistic and creative way....... Not so, eccentric for sure but so self-absorbed one bores and tires of them very quickly..... tiresome ++

If the idea of being locked in a room with a pair of crazy old cat ladies with high shrill voices who pop in and out of clothes, ramble out non-sequiturs ad nauseam, and yell at each other while their pets pee on the carpet appeals to you…

Having seen the documentary I enjoyed the movie but agree much of the 'how' is missing from the story. However it was well acted. I agree the accents seemed forced, but if you are familiar with the Hamptons and the accent, you will…

I have seen the documentary long prior to watching this, and the filmmakers here filled in a lot of missing lead-up information to how the decline of the two Edies came about. Some of the meatiest performances I've seen from these two…

Big Edie and Little Edie Bouvier Beale trapped in a terrible and heartbreaking folie à deux. Make sure you watch this one before you see the 2009 fictionalization, which SFPL also owns.
