Kate Beaton has been making silly comics about history (and other things) for years on the web. There was a self-published volume of her webcomics, but Beaton had a huge hit with her Drawn & Quarterly book Hark! A Vagrant.
Part of the…

This book made me laugh out loud at least 50 times. Kind of like a Far Side of historical and literary subjects, pick it up if you want to see something like a thin-skinned aristocrat breaking into tears after being taunted by a foul…

Beaton's skewing (or is that skewering?) of historical people and events is quite entertaining and I had to show my husband and son the ones that made me burst out laughing. A bit too much swearing for me and the book cover schtick went on…

Hello... Hello, is this thing on? Hark! A vagrant, is a razzmatazz of historical and literary jokes. Reading this book probable will not cure any diseases, but you may need a fun-ectomy after you're done.

A fun read. I liked the comics around historical situations and people. One does have to know a little about the history & people to get the humour but just the gist of the happening.
I really liked the literary comics, especially the…

Kate Beaton's Hark! A Vagrant is like the funny pages for literature and history majors. Each strip is an exploration of a famous writer, characters from his works, or a notable person from history. Rather than treating these figures with…

I have wasted plenty of time on Kate Beaton's website laughing. Had just as much fun reading the book, which I'm sad that it took me so long to get to it. Canadian history can be fun and I love making fun (and loving) our national…

This was terrible. Very rude & crude, gives Canadians a bad name. The characters mentioned would surely turn in their graves at the sight of this. It's incredibly disrespectful.

A fun book that, unlike a lot of short-piece humour, does not cause a headache half way through from slap-happy overdose. This book uses classic material that, even in satire, just never grows old. Kate Beaton is a talented person.

Kate Beaton has created a brilliant cartoon that fuses history, literature and out and out sarcasm. Her subjects range from historical figures to reinterpreting old books based solely on their covers. (The Nancy Drew covers are…

You will laugh, and laugh and then feel really smart because you get the jokes. Awesome, doodle-y drawings too. Like hilarious notes passed in class.

Very clever cartoons that are best for people familiar with classic fiction, a little history (and that includes Canadian history) and pop culture. I figure I got about 3/4 of them, but they are really sharply observed and quite funny.
"Witty, occasionally wise, sometimes surreal, at other times silly, mocking of past, present and pretense, Hark! A Vagrant is one of the most innovative and delightful collections I’ve come across."

Very funny. The Nancy Drew interpretations alone make this a fun read. Despite the style of illustrations, this is not a book for kids.
