10 short stories on a 5th-6th grade reading level, primarily humorous, about people outwitting the Devil or the Devil outwitting people. Each story is a little gem. Babbitt’s Devil is a pompous fellow, a bit bored, who runs an organized Hell. He tries tricks like pretending to be a fairy godmother and granting three wishes or breaking up love relationships, and he is always surprised by human behavior. My favorite story, “Ashes”, is a perfect example of storytelling humor, when a man ends up in Hell, accompanied by a pig that he can’t seem to get rid of. I wish I could read it aloud to you.

One of my childhood favorites! Enjoy ten darkly ironic stories of the Devil trying to outsmart -- and usually, ending up outsmarted by -- everyone else. Natalie Babbitt passed away on 10/31: reading this aloud to the Wednesday-Addams-esque child in your life would be a great way to remember her.
