This novel was written in 1934. It is the first in a series of 32 novels about Inspector Allyen of the Metropolitan Police. A good fast read.

A golden oldie. We are introduced to Inspector Alleyn and Nigel Bathgate in the investigation that follows a murder committed at a game of Murder in the country home of Hubert Handesley where Nigel together with his cousin are guests. His cousin is the victim, having been killed with the knife which he brought to the party. There are is a major red herring--a group of Russians. The solution was fun to try to guess.
