Snow Leopard might be good but this was a little too grim to read while reading American Heiress especially.

Intriguing, if not entirely successful, clash of civilizations novel from the award-winning author of "The Snow Leopard." In a remote jungle in South America, American missionaries, a cynical mercenary, and the native tribes battle over religion, culture, and land. None of the characters are particularly well-drawn and his critique of Western involvement in Latin America is fuzzy. Kingslover's "The Poisonwood Bible" is a better, more nuanced treatment of a similar subject. Made into a film in 1991 with Tom Berenger, John Lithgow, Tom Waits, and Daryl Hannah.
