This a classic science fiction novel and one of the best. Lem was a much harder science fiction writer than most American writers of the period and there is a lot of it in this book. The story involves a journey to a distant planet where signs of intelligent life have been detected. The journey itself is quite interesting and there is much discussion of the properties of black holes of different types and how they can be used to counter the time dilation effects of near light speed travel to some extent by parking near the edge of the event horizon and taking advantage of the high gravity. Where it really gets interesting is when the ship arrives in the vicinity of the alien planet.
