This might be well called the Happy Slave Narratives, as the majority of narratives at a minimum indicate that the interviewees felt life was no worse under slavery. One needs to understand this in the context of the vast majority of interviewers being white in the Jim Crow South, which one might expect to lead to a significant bias. I don't doubt that much of the sentiment was sincere and there were some people happier under slavery, but I do feel if the interviewers were African American the narrative would have been less favorable to slavery.
