Lucuna the involuntary writer (write on wall her talent) for grumpy gnomish Magician (information is his talent) Humphrey on his biography for how fixing her wasted life question
Magician wanted his wife Rose (not the current one) out of hell (long story thanks to female villain & him taking a forget potion that expired in x years). He wanted to make a deal.
Problem that he had to wait in Demon's waiting room while current wife (The gorgon, longer story) play roles in nightmares to pass the time. Slick.
Nice biography on at at heart a nerd in magical clothing on how he got his C- (ouch!) degree from minor demon university (nice touch on minority angle), how he stay young & who's his actual children.
Magician Humphrey had a double-edged sword of having fellow misfits & eccentrics as friends & spouses (by looks, intelligence or circumstances) & he paid the price.
Disguised Demon Xanth (he exiled on Earth patch for penalty on cosmic game that became enchanted: See The Source of magic) throws a massive curve balls on answer on preposterous question (what color mermaid's panties :See Color of Her Panties) & which one (Magician married at least four times) including his first love that never consummated to take.
Whoops.
He & demon settled on former.
It's the prim practical ladies who hashed out a deal on latter magician much to chagrined demon expecting catfight.
Nice ending on Lucuna getting her second chance in life after using answer to question.
