Eleven year old Marnus Erasmus narrates this troubling story of his Afrikaans family in the last years of apartheid when the desperation to maintain the status quo reinforced the arrogance and self-delusion of the Afrikaans people. This novel has already become a South African classic.

This story is told from the perspective of the young son of Boer parents in the 1970s who comes to see the hyprocisy of his father and apartheid. Behr brilliantly parallels the South African situation through the brutal behaviour of a Chilean visitor. The story ends 15 years later in Angola. Very good.
