I enjoyed this book! Portrait of a dysfunctional family with many surprises--I only figured out one. Be ready for it to be a little slow moving in the English/Jane Austin style. It kept me reading wondering what was going to happen. I did have to keep reminding myself that this novel was set in the present day as the strictures of family and society seemed from a much earlier decade. Spoiler alert: my favorite sentence to sum up the theme of the book was on p. 275 and thought by Julia when she finally figured out what had happened to their lives. She thinks, "now I see there was no tyranny except the one I imposed upon myself." This theme gives the book universal appeal as I believe we all do that in some ways, to some degree, some times in our lives.
