This is a disjointed set of character studies; and most of the characters are truly awful people. It sort of follows the accordion, but it's not really the main theme of the book: it's a weak glue that holds many different stories together. This book is crass. Unnecessary (meaning they don't promote the story in any way) bad language and sexual situations, even some gross ones involving raping and molesting children.

Although I liked her book, "The Shipping News", I enjoyed this one more. I read it a long time ago but I still remember the laugh-out-loud scene about the surprise birthday party given by the woman's husband (forgot their names).

Grim, but beautifully written.
