Superb story giving convincing insight into civilian life under the Argentinian Military Junta. To the main character Richard, survival depends on being dispassionate and ignorant of the "disappeared" even when he learns they are fellow University students. The story follows the British retaking of the Falkland Islands and the ramifications and opportunities in business for Richard with the involvement of a US couple (read CIA) in a nascent democracy. There is a compelling and passionate love story between Richard and Pablo who lived in the San Francisco during the 80's.
The last part of the book deals with the trauma and devastation of AIDS on their lives. Highly recommended Colm Toibin is the AUTHOR.
