Weeks later, I found myself still thinking about sections of the book. I enjoyed the writing style and the book took me to a time and era I was not familiar with, yet felt I belonged. Not only did the book take me on a visit to the deep south but gives me pause to return.

Journalist Rick Bragg wrote a tribute to his mother and a memoir of his family’s hardscrabble life in small town Alabama.

He’s such an engaging storyteller, but the chip on his shoulder, which he readily, admits is pretty big! Still, I want to understand people like his family so will read more of his writing to get his point of view.

A touching tribute to his mother, Bragg's book is a poignant illustration of life on the poor side of the tracks. He gives himself as Exhibit A in a study of the difficulties of breaking out of the South's class structure.
