TC Boyle is truly one of the best writers around. His characters are well fleshed and the story is absorbing. The writing flows well in a sophisticated and entertaining manner. His relating of the care of a psychotic, rich son of a powerful historic figure that is married to a very unique woman is very riveting.
I love T.C.Boyle's short stories and this is the first novel of his that I've read. I found it very tedious reading. It would have been better as a short story. There just isn't enough there to stretch it out to the length of a novel. I read it as an eBook and was able to download it immediately without being on a waiting list. It's lack of popularity should have been my first clue.
Fascinating account of how mental illness was seen and treated in the last century, from a very personal viewpoint. The female protagonist is in love with a schizophrenic, only she has no concept of what that is. With Boyle's novels, I find myself being reeled in like a fish on a line, becoming fascinated with his characters, and inordinately curious about what befalls them.
