Sonalal, a snake charmer, kills his own snake in a moment of anger. He suffers in grief and despair as his life then falls apart. Well written story dealing with relationships, in the Indian culture.

An intriguing short novel. I have a penchant for fiction from Indian writers and this one does not disappoint although it is not as good as some others (such as the Raj Quartet, and A Suitable Boy - both OUTSTANDING). But,... this writer is pretty good. The book is charming, and I use that word in the most complimentary sense. Almost a fairy tale.
