Classic themes of suffering and redemption in this moral tale of a man’s struggle to come to terms with the death of his daughter. When she is killed in a terrorist bomb attack in Italy, the family find their own lives torn asunder. A slightly ironic sense of humour makes this contemporary story entirely readable and rewarding, touching both heart and mind.

I have been reading all of Robert Hellenga's novels - I started with The 16 Pleasures. He is a wonderful writer who writes about an Italy that I knew personally. He also is right on with his family portrayals and characterizations. However in this novel he throws in some sexual descriptions and references that are almost bizarre as they do not relate to or add to the passages where they are found. It is almost as if he felt he needed some sex to make the book adult. It's a wonderful story so well told I just don't get the weird sexual references.
