This is a great album. Great from start to finish. The album opens with Tom Sawyer which has a great rhythm to it, and Geddy Lee delivering some solid vocal work. Followed by the Red Barchetta, the album continues along delivering another great song.

I'd claim this is the best album Rush made, or could make, and will not likely approach in awesomeness again. But apart from that, or any other sort of comparison to other works, this album is filled with great tunes. As can be said of works by other bands, if you're a fan, you don't need to be told how awesome this album is; and if you're not, you can't be convinced. Rush can be polarizing ...

Capitalizing on the success of Permanent Waves & it's rock anthem "The Spirit of Radio" comes Moving Pictures; the plateau on the peak of Mount Rush; they have arrived. Many of the songs are radio friendly, short, good hooks, etc. In typical Rush fashion these songs are the epitome of "chops" with exciting drum, guitar, & bass "licks" that combine to appeal to a radio audience (there was no internet) and their loyal fan base of musicians (most loyal Rush fans are male & play drums, bass, or guitar). It seems that Lee, Lifeson, & Peart managed to combine their desire to write & perform challenging music that could also appeal to a large audience. Where 2112 established the benchmark for prog rock albums, Moving Pictures is the benchmark for rock albums; it's importance resonates today (2010 - 2011) as Rush recently toured the entire album start to finish using "Time Machine Tour" as the advertising slogan.
