I found myself going back to this book whenever I had a few minutes to read. It was written in such a way that it made for intoxicating indulgence into a world we no longer know.

A good read! Written by a journalist, it reads like a story. I couldn't put it down!

This account of a Victorian scandal provides the reader not only with entertainment but also with a snapshot of man and woman relationships at a time when women were expected to submit to their husbands in every way. The main character Florence has had to endure an alcoholic first husband who dies of a heart attack. She then remarries (she for love, he for her money) and her second husband has a violent temper which comes to surface when he challenges the frivolity of Florence's comfortable lifestyle. He also has strange requests in the bedroom and has an affair. Florence cannot tolerate the treatment any more. Her husband is found to be poisoned and dies a painful death. But who is the murderer? There are three main suspects; Florence, her lady companion and the recently fired stable hand. This is a real page turner as the reader follows the investigation and trial that follows.
