Coming from Lawhead's Pendragon series, I expected great things of this book. I was not disappointed, and was also surprised by what I read. Rather than an account of Patrick's adult life, this is a story of his growing up and young adult years. Patrick (who goes by several other names before being called so) goes on multiple journeys, all long and hard, searching for a sense of meaning in his life. I appreciated the arc the story took, and the themes dealt with later in the book.

Thematically, quite like Lawhead's other works in this genre, particularly The Iron Lance. Slightly arrogant boy gets into trouble, travels far, learns humility.
Well written and a good read.
