This frantic 'expedition' to southern, northern and western Ethiopia is told with melodrama, hyperbole, and condescension. The text is enhanced with a map, black and white photos; and a lengthy bibliography. Better to read the "Similar Titles" and "In Ethiopia with a Mule" by Dervla Murphy (1968).

Accompanied by his faithful guide Samson, a local gold miner turned taxi driver, Tahir Shah travels fearlessly through Ethiopia, determined to find the biblical land of Ophir, legendary source of King Solomon’s gold mines. An Afghan by birth, and a self-described travel adventure addict, Shah has a talent for incorporating a fascinating mix of political and historical background in his story, and has an unfailing sense of humour and optimism, even in the most desperate circumstances.
