Twenty some pages so far and it feels like and smells like moral relativism, but i will keep reading. Maybe i can learn something..... well, i have learned a great deal about the period in question and his work has made things a lot clearer for me. Very good writing. I understand his point that polytheism and monotheism played a great role throughout history. Still, my initial guess was confirmed on the last few pages. ( I should have said "religio relativism" instead.) By the way, I did not know that Jews used the mezuzah on the doorpost of the front door to their homes as a wishing well, a sort of 'lucky charms' to go to and touch every time they desired something. I vaguely remember the phrase" ....between thine eyes and upon thy gate" serving as a constant reminder of the covenant that one has with God. Thus I am not as impressed by the summation of his ideas. It might have been more 'polytheistic' of the author to have said nothing.
