Brian Robeson, 13, is the only passenger on a small plane flying him to visit his father in the Canadian wilderness when the pilot has a heart attack and dies. The plane drifts off course and finally crashes into a small lake. Miraculously Brian is able to swim free of the plane, arriving on a sandy tree-lined shore with only his clothing, a tattered windbreaker, and the hatchet his mother had given him as a present.

Narrator Peter Coyote brings this riveting story alive. One of my favorite audiobooks. Excellent choice for a family car trip.

Great book and narration, but there was an annoying crackling/snapping sound in the middle. Very annoying.

Listened to this in 05 & now again. Peter Coyote has a great voice for this book. Held my interest, learned interesting facts - as if I'll ever manage to do the same. Ha. Great reading for young people.

Just a terrific book--I can't say enough good things about it. This book is usually read by grade 6 students and I can see why. You really feel you're living through all the harrowing survival experiences that Brian has when he's stranded in the Canadian wilderness after a plane crash.

One of my favorite books as a "tween". Great read for young boys, as the main character is a boy - even though I am a gal, I loved the story as well and found the character easy to relate to.
