Terrific aliens - terrific characters - terrific plot.
First of a 3 book series - all equally good.
Julie Czerneda is a Canadian author whose flair for character development is matched by her superb ability to create a compelling future in which humans are drawn into the universe--sometimes kicking and screaming--by extra-terrestrials, each with their own agendas.
The story begins on the Northwest coast of Canada, but the author focuses (thankfully) on its natural beauty while choosing to be cosmopolitan about the people (scientists and administrators) whom she creates to populate the book.
Ms. Czerneda cleverly shows us this world through the eyes of a woman whose interest in earthly biology is matched by a wilful ignorance of the intelligences inhabiting the rest of the known universe.
As the story progresses, "Mac" Connor is forced to interact with a being whom she barely understands. The ultimate fate of Brymn Las has a searing effect on "Mac" and opens her eyes to a universe filled with wonder and terror.
These are just some of the powerful emotions Julie Czernada plumbs in this brilliant and powerful introduction to her Species Imperative trilogy.
This is book 1 ie. "Species Imperative #1". Entertaining, suspenseful and quite inventive with believable descriptions of aliens and their customs.
