Text simple enough for good 1st and 2nd grade readers to read independently offers a surprising amount of interesting details about sharks. Photographs, text and labeled illustrations combine to introduce information about the wide variety of different types of sharks, sharks' bodies, eating habits, and swimming and travel habits. The book also discusses scientists who study sharks, along with some of their discoveries about them, and emphasizes the need to protect sharks from over-fishing. Special features include a "Did You Know?" section of fun shark facts, safety tips for avoiding sharks when swimming in the ocean, and a photo-illustrated glossary. I gave this book a general reader age rating of 9 and under, though it could also be a good high-interest choice for reluctant older readers. Preschoolers fascinated by sharks would enjoy it as a read-aloud.
