I promise that this isn't really a spoiler, and I've just got to say it: The best moment in this book was Vergil Flowers arresting a couple of arrogant Homeland Security dudes for murder!
Like any good crime story that aspires to entertain us, this one has a measure of wry humor to take the edge off the nasty stuff; and Sandford doesn't let his great detective take himself too seriously. A well written tale of this kind is like a well planned meal, incorporating a variety of flavors and spices: a dose of contemporary political chicanery, bit of international intrigue, a shade of noir, a sexual dalliance or two for dessert. Without all of that, a trail of dead bodies and car chases would not have been the least bit palatable.
And a sense of place helps too. All in all, good fun.

Excellent, no flaws. Even funny. You'll not find a better brainless thriller.

Virgil Flowers #2. A serial killer is leaving bodies on veterans' memorials. Davenport is dealing with the Republican convention so it is up to Flowers to hunt down the killer.

Interesting depth to the story with its threads in the Vietnam war. Are the bad guys really good? What happens when the bad guys go after other bad guys? Virgil Flowers is an interesting character with a steamy side.

Pretty formula based, but it was a fun summer read.

Yup, Sandford's Virgil "effing" Flowers is in top form. A great suspense/action character. Neither fish nor foul criminals are safe when Virgil is on the case!

This was my first Virgil Flowers encounter and I think I like the guy. He ranks a close second to my all time favorite, Robert Parker's Spenser. The plot moved along at a good clip and the action was believable and intense at times. The only thing I thought was hilarious through all the tough guy personality and driving force to get the bad guy was the scene where Virgil is sitting in a restaurant, starved to death.... starve to death, and he orders an apple salad and a piece of carrot cake. His friend orders chocolate mousse. What??? Though the book was much longer than what I usually read (414 pgs), I like the book and will definitely read another.

This is your basic gristled detective story where he figures all these un-attached things to solve the crime.

Virgil Flowers works for the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and despite his long blond hair and usual attire of jeans and aged rock t-shirts, he gets called for a lot of tough cases. And this one is tough. The first body is discovered near a veteran's memorial, execution style with a lemon in his mouth. And the list continues, all with the same M.O. He and his team frantically work to find the connection between the murders and how many more names are on the list. The trail winds down several paths and across several states. At the hub of the trails is the revenge killing for a massacre that happened in Viet Nam years ago. Can he stop it before more innocent bodies drop?
