Martin is a burglar, so talented and organized that he has never been caught. Of course, after 9 years, not one of his “clients,” as he calls them, has ever noticed anything was gone. Martin only steals what he believes they won’t miss. He studies them for months, carefully noting their tendencies and schedules. He quietly picks their locks and enters many times before stealing anything. Martin has a strict set of rules that he always follows and while he never personally meets any of his clients, he grows to think of them as friends, even *under his protection*, in a way. And eventually he decides to begin helping some of them. When one minor accident throws him off his careful plan, events cascade, and Martin is forced to engage with the real people in unexpected ways.

*Something Missing* has a lot of humor but mainly the appeal is the level of detail, which invests you in the outcomes of each burglaring adventure and his eventual hesitant attempts to connect with people. An odd idea which grows on you as you read.

I really enjoyed this different book - quite intriguing!

I thought the book's pace was terribly slow at first and my interest level was low, but as more characters were introduced and the pace quickened, the detailed information of the first half was shown to be useful. The book won me over and I am impressed by the author's purposeful and meticulous detail and organization.

"In this fun, clever mystery, the "bad guy" is actually a good guy. An endearing thief with a conscience (and obsessive-compulsive disorder), Martin Railsback steals only items that will go unnoticed and even plays guardian angel to the homeowners he burglarizes."
