I was disappointed with the slowness of the movie. The acting was good, but there really didn`t seem to be too much chemistry between Ben and Penelope. Patricia Clarkson is gorgeous and seemed very realistic as Bens` longstanding sex buddy.
Too slow and I didn`t enjoy the story line. Sorry.

Gave up after 40 minutes. Definitely not my kind of movie. Found it to be so boring.

Director Isabel Coixet evokes spell-binding atmosphere and top notch performances from stars Ben Kingsley & Penelope Cruz with equally fine support from Patricia Clarkson & Dennis Hopper. A real old-fashioned love story of a mature man & and his beautiful young student is destined for heartbreak from the start. I watched captivated from start to finish, with a lump in my throat much of the time, which for me is saying a lot!

A film that is well put together but may not be to everyone's taste. It provides good insights into different types of character. It was too slow for my taste, however, and I was pretty bored with it by the halfway mark.

Patricia Clarkson is perfect as the erotic mistress about to be cheated on... but Dennis Hopper is miscast as the best-friend lingering Lothario... Ben Kingsley is way too old and grotesque and unbelievably awkward and miscast as the self-loathing but profligate professor - why Hollywood thinks he could be a woman like Penelope Cruz' SEXY BEAST is beyond me... and Cruz, of course is the exact opposite - the one true beautiful note in the film: A serious siren, totally ravishing and beguiling all at once, while wrapped in an innocence that usually leaves us in our pre-teens.
Getting over the actually cast chosen to portray this poignant story's characters and their lives' machinations was the hard part for me watching this film. It didn't ring true - and as such, it took away from my enjoyment of the story.
But you can't deny that there's enough flashes of brilliance, intellect, emotional upheaval and dark wit, and it left me enjoying the movie as a whole, in the end.
If you're an adult - all the issues are there to make you want to watch: Fuelling emotional life thru' sex... the fear of commitment to another... jealousy... age gaps as a hindrance to maintaining relationships... narcissism versus intimacy... brutal insults versus candour... I could go on - but why continue - see for yourself... it's a really mature film for discriminating tastes and an escape from the usual ennui of Hollywood movies for adult audiences these days.
