"Suicide Is Painless" (the theme song) was actually a poem written by Mike Altman, the then-14-year-old son of director Robert Altman. Johnny Mandel provided the music, which was used without the title/lyrics for the TV show, which, after all, was a prime-time network sitcom in 1972, set in an army medical corps during the Korean War, so no surprise there.
