Looking for a heart wrenching and excellently illustrated dramatic graphic novel that imaginatively deals with bullying, friendship, and coping with family hardship.

A great story about a girl and her coping mechanisms while dealing with bullies, dying, and death. I cried.

I don't know how anyone could not fall in love with Barbara. She sure would be a tough child to be around but under the circumstances I would understand. She is trying to make sense of her world. Loved it!

Bullies and monsters, heroes and traps, and 5th Grade and serious issues combine to make a tremendous story about a young girl and her need to escape into a fantasy world. The result is a sad and hopeful hero's journey unlike anything I've read in years. The illustrations are a bit choppy at times, but convey a divide between reality and fantasy quite well. Recommended for anyone who doesn't fit in and especially for those who don't want to.

Barbara is a strange, but awesome little girl who kills giants to avoid the problems in her real-world life. She wears weird anime hats with ears, GMs D&D games for her brother and his friends, and deflects insults from bullies and questions from her teachers with sarcasm. If you’re having trouble getting through the first half, stick with it, it’ll pay off by the end.

Very excellent story

I thought that it wasn't going to be very good, but don't judge a book by its cover! I usually don't like to read graphic novels, but this is a fantastic book.

Oh god, this book. I have to say, for the first couple of issues I wasn't really feeling it. It's sort of strange and even a little off-putting at first. But by the end, I was literally crying, in public, on the subway, and didn't even care who saw me. No spoilers, but the last third of this book is gorgeous and heartbreaking. A must-read.

Such an awesome book. Really interesting story, with some great artwork (Who says you need color to draw epic spreads?). One of my favorite graphic novels, and I've read a ton!
