Paige and her friends Nikki and Lacey have been planning to be Homecoming Princesses together since they were children. A drunk driving accident after their junior year fractures their friendship, and makes Paige reexamine everything in her life. There are a lot of good parts of this book; Paige’s growth in creative writing class, her realization that even the uncool kids in high school have meaningful friendships, her relationship with her sister, and her sudden decision to stand up to intolerance. However, there are some bizarre elements to the book that really take away from it. Paige’s mother is completely unrealistic. She says horrible things to Paige throughout the book, and wants her daughter to be engaged by the end of high school. Paige’s summer in Paris is a strange, meaningless sidenote in the book. Paige’s willingness to go back to her terrible boyfriend over and over again isn’t believable either if readers are supposed to believe that Paige is really changing.

So good. About trying to be perfect, succeeding, then hating it and finding your actual self.
