Not only a harrowing tale of pollution, disease, and governmental ineptitude but also a fascinating history of epidemiology and industrial chemistry. For such thick subjects, the story is engaging, reading like a who-done-it mystery until the very end.

Tom's River describes a slow-motion pollution catastrophe unfolding over decades in New Jersey, as families of children with brain tumors slowly unfold the potential chemical contribution from a nearby facility. Author Fagin drips the science slowly into our blood as we read, feeling sick to our stomachs as we watch the paralyzed governments fail to stop pollution of water wells. Fagin is painstaking about his statistics and the evidence.
