A delightful novel of historical fiction with romance, time travel, and fun and interesting characters, Bee Ridgway’s debut novel feels surefooted and masterful, as if she’s been churning these things out for years. Lord and military commander Nick Davenant dies fighting in Spain during the Napoleonic Wars, but wakes up 200 years in the future and told he’s a member of a time-travelling group called the Guild. During a trip back to his original time to find a talisman that could rip time apart, he comes across Julia Percy, a young woman with her own time manipulation secrets but with no knowledge of the Guild. The plot meanders and winds around a bit, but you won’t even notice since you’re having such a fun time with the characters. A great beach read, and a great novel in the tradition of A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES by Deborah Harkness and the OUTLANDER series by Diana Gabaldon.

If you loved Discovery of Witches and the Diana Gabaldon series, you will love this book too! Interesting story, great historical detail. Can't wait for the second in the series.

Nick Davenant is a marquess who suddenly, and inexplicably, found himself flung 200 years into the future. Discovered by The Guild, a group of time travelers like him, Nick learns he has a set of unusual skills, and learns to hide those skills in order to fit into modern life. Firmly settled into his life of gentlemanly leisure, he is called into service by The Guild and learns he is needed to go back in time -- to 1815, three years following his disappearance on the battlefield. Once there, he is reunited with the woman who has long been part of his dreams, the lovely Julia, who has secrets of her own.

Combining the world-weariness of some of our favorite long-living characters of recent novels (Matthew from A Discovery of Witches and Jake from The Last Werewolf come to mind) with a meditation on the fickle nature of time, the magic that flows beneath what we think we know, the power of love, shifting alliances, and a look at a Britain on the verge of massive transformation, The River of No Return is an engrossing and entirely satisfying read with elements to appeal to a wide variety of genre readers.

I really enjoyed the story. It is interesting to view history from the perspective of the people present in the time and how they might view it if they knew what the future would bring. I am looking forward to the sequel!

Finally finished! This book went on for entirely too long. The editor should have cut at least 200 pages, or more, of babbling. I liked the idea of the story so I kept giving it just a few more pages. After a while I was just too invested to quit. Come to find out it’s a series, so the story isn’t over, and I don’t plan on reading the rest. Boy, I’m sure glad I was such a trooper and finished the book! I guess it’s a good thing I wasn’t reading it near a river, or I might have given it a good toss, and brought true meaning to the title. I couldn’t because it’s a library book. This book killed my reading pace so I’m off to find one to resurrect it.(less)
