Stoneyville is a small town on the coast of Ireland where all the families know each other. When Chicky decides to take an old decaying mansion, Stone House, and turn it into a restful place for a holiday by the sea, the town thinks she is crazy. She is helped by Rigger (a bad boy turned good who is handy around the place) and her niece Orla (a whiz at business). Finally the first week of paying guests arrive: John, the American movie star thinks he has arrived incognito; Winnie and Lillian, forced into taking a holiday together; Nuala and Henry, husband and wife , both doctors who have been shaken by seeing too much death; Anders, the Swedish boy, hates his father's business, but has a real talent for music; Miss Nell Howe, a retired school teacher, who criticizes everything and leaves a day early, much to everyone's relief; the Walls who have entered in 200 contests (and won everything from a microwave oven to velvet curtains, including the week at Stone House); and Freda , the psychic who is afraid of her own visions. You will laugh and cry as you spend the week with this odd group who share their secrets and might even have some of their dreams come true

Though the characters have some problems in their past, all comes together too neatly in the end to be believable. Mildly entertaining.

It wasn't my favourite Binchy book and I didn't find myself invested in the characters as I had been in other novels. I like that the stories were told about each individual. It is what I have come to expect from Maeve Binchy. I quite enjoyed that some other characters made returns.

i am listening to this audio book right now and enjoying the "cozy" feeling it gives me. I will be sorry to come to the end of it...want to spend time at Stone house with Chicky Star and her staff and the guests...love the book and Maeve Binchy's writing.

I am currently listening to the audiobook and I love it so far. The narrator is very, very good and the book moves along quite nicely.

Though I normally like her books, this became too boring to continue.

Chicky Starr leaves the NYC boarding house where she has worked for years, moves back to Ireland, buys Stone House, and fixes it up to be a hotel. Binchy also recounts the life stories of her guests who find answers to their problems during their stay. This book made me want a vacation in Ireland at a place just like Stone House! Lots of walking, wildlife, good food, and community.

All the characters spring to life on the page, and all the stories are engaging. So sad that it's Binchy's last novel.

I have loved this writer for a long time and will miss her. Lovely stories and they leave one feeling good, kind of like high tea with scones, cream and jam!

Typical Binchy novel, written around a central local with different characters entering the picture. I've always found her novels very easy reading and it's sad that we won't be able to pick up another of her novels and getting a quick Binchy fix.

LOVED it. A wonderful swan song, but so sad it is her last. It seemed obvious she was launching a new series with this one. Having read (and loved) all of the ones in her earlier series (Scarlet Feather, etc.), I would have LOVED to continue to get to know these characters. A wonderful read.
