Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl crossed the Pacific Ocean in a balsa wood raft in 1947, together with five men, to prove that South Americans back in pre-Columbian times could have crossed the sea to settle on Polynesian islands. After gathering financing for the trip with loans and donations, they set off on an epic 101-day-long journey across eight thousand kilometers, all while the world was watching

I have always loved the book and found it inspiring. I was worried that the movie would not live up to the book, but I actually enjoyed the movie. The actors were very good in their roles.

Interesting movie- especially if you're unaware of the Thor Heyerdahl story.

This is a 2012 historical docudrama directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg.
It is about the 1947 Kon-Tiki expedition.
Although the film is a gripping and fascinating adventure, the most glaring inaccuracy is the obvious absence of indigenous Polynesians.
The scenes depicting Heyerdahl's experiences on Fatu Hiva were shot in Thailand with Thai extras who do not resemble native Polynesians, and who are shown holding compound spears not typical of the Marquesas Islands.
Although the ship's parrot is eaten by a shark in the film, it was actually washed overboard by a large wave.
In any case, it is an exciting and thrilling film with superb visual effects.

Great adventure movie, especially if you read the book as a kid. It looked great too, however, don't watch the "making of" bonus, as it actually disenchants one of the splendor of the adventure. Well acted, but I made the mistake of watching the dubbed version. If you want the sound and nuances of the actors actual emotions, stick to the Norwegian.

I found this film - the true story of 5 men on a raft crossing the pacific ocean with no modern conveniences other than a radio in 1947 - to be one of the most inspiring films made in recent history. The cinematography alone is worth a viewing of this lovely film.

For an adventure movie based on a book, which is based on a true story, it is just OK. You have a choice of the English version or the Norwegian version, and I chose the former. Nothing to get excited about, though.

Thor Heyerdadl proved one man can change the course of history. Even in modern times, we have much to learn. Simply an amazing story of courage and ingenuity have traveled 8.000 kilometers!

Not bad, but I pretty much agree with the majority here. Read the book; it's much better!

History, and the background around it.

First off this movie isn’t bad but in no way should it have been nominated for an academy award. Second, this movie could have been so much better!!! The most annoying thing is until the end of the movie they never tell you how many days at sea they are at and they never show the little things, like how they are getting water, bathing, day to day life, killing time, etc. An OK movie.
