This movie is about the suffering that can be introduced by severe, protracted medical and mental problems--suffering of the patient, and the suffering of the loved one who tries to offer loving support.

The acting is superb, the film is high quality, and I recommend it to you though it will leave you saddened. A genre of problem that can hit any of us is portrayed with brilliance, but the solutions remain in the shadows, ellusive even to the kind and well educated family we follow.

I thought this was a moving portrait of an elderly couple- it's serious stuff crafted by one of the great European directors currently working in film.

This is a 2012 French drama written and directed by the Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke.
The film focuses on an elderly couple, Anne and Georges, who are retired music teachers with a daughter who lives abroad.
Anne suffers a stroke which paralyses her on the right side of her body.
What a depressing and heart-breaking movie it is!
Yes, it is about love.
What Georges did to his deteriorating wife is definitely an act of love, if not an act of God.
Superb are the performances of the elderly actors---Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva.

Warning. This is definitely not a first-date movie. Amour is well acted but don't expect a Hollywood ending. This is harsh reality portrayed in all of its beauty and ugliness. The movie crawls at a snail's pace towards its logical conclusion. It is quite challenging to watch at times and it is remarkable the movie ever got made. Due to the needlessly extended length of the movie I could only give it two stars. The ending was a bit too cryptic for my liking as well. Watch it and judge for yourself.

It might have been a good story but the English sub-titles were inadequate. Gave up on the film 1/4 way into it.

Who to blame for the antiseptic system for the elders IN THE CURRENT SOCIETY of the USA and Europe?
Trintignant still strong, ni se qua then ni se qua now! He and Emmanuelle acting under the direction of Haneke a triumph .
Amour is the reality that is there waiting for us.

A remarkable film in every way. "Amour" dissolves the distance between viewers and actors. You live every moment with this elderly French couple, experiencing their handsome apartment first as an airy, high-ceilinged, well-loved home then a suffocating, claustrophobic cage. The camerawork and lighting are so uncanny that you almost smell the creeping decay of a once-vital life. Jean-Louis Trintignant is magnetic to watch. Every move he makes, every facial gesture is so exquisitely controlled that you simply forget you're watching a veteran actor. The scene towards the end where the camera lingers on him standing over the sink calmly cutting delicate white flowers is unfathomably haunting. It has the quality of a painting that's both still life and numinous ritual.
