What the movie is supposed to be:
A motorcycle stunt rider turns to robbing banks as a way to provide for his lover and their newborn child, a decision that puts him on a collision course with an ambitious rookie cop navigating a department ruled by a corrupt detective.
What happens:
A motorcycle stunt rider leaves the profession and comes to the same small town his ex-girlfriend lives in. He learns they have a baby together and that she is living with a man whom she wants more than him. (I.e., are the stunt rider and the mother of his child are EX-lovers.) While riding his motorcycle in the woods one day, the ex-stuntman meets up with a guy whose business is fixing mechanical things (bikes for one) who then invites the stuntman to also fix bikes, if there is ever a need for their services. Oh, and the bike repairman lets the ex-stuntman live in a trailer on his property. What? Just like that? Yup. Well, the stuntman and the repairman ain't making much money, so they devise a plan to rob a bank or two. The stuntman gives presents and money to the mother. The boyfriend is not too keen on that. The repairman no longer wants to rob banks, so the stuntman goes it alone. Uh-oh. He gets chased by a cop into someone's house. That is where their worlds collide. One lives and one dies. (So you don't actually see Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper trade lines or sideways smiles or anything.) I didn't watch much more. Actually, I fast forwarded through the beginning.

Absolutely phenomenal film! A tense and touching story about fathers and sons and the legacies that are left behind as the consequences of their decisions. Everyone in this film is doing peak work. The structure is atypical but it completely fits the story it’s telling and is executed wonderfully. Highly recommended!

I kept asking my girl friend as we watched the movie, is this any good? and she would answer not sure yet but so far a bit stinky. First Ryan really did his character justice. A low life that can do only one thing good and that is ride a motorcycle very well. The rest of his life is one bad decision after another a real looser. He fits my thoughts that people with a lot of dumb disorganized tattoos make dumb decisions in life and are mentally off balance. Kind of guy who would own a pit bull dog. The move was disorganized from begging to the end and at the end we both agreed can't rate over a two star and wish we had not watched it.

One of the worst movies I've suffered through. Don't waste your time. Lame, ridiculously patched together storyline, and acting not much better. Too bad, because it is a pretty good cast of actors and they deserved better.

Boring and drawn out wouldn't recommend wasting your time

The first half is 5 stars. I felt that the director missed opportunities in the second half because he did not completely convey the horrible situation of the police officer. Maybe he was pressed by the producers to shorten the already long film.

If you saw the trailer for this 2012 films, it really only gave you half the film. It's an interesting/frustrating movie in that is feels like 2 movies crammed into one 140 minute movie. In the first act, a carnival stunt bike rider (Ryan Gosling) learns he has a son with his ex-girlfriend (Eva Mendes) and decides to stick around town, but then begins robbing banks with his partner (Aussie actor Ben Mendelsohn). Act 2 switches the focus to a local rookie cop (Bradley Cooper) who encounters corruption in the department, and the final act, set years later, deals with the cop's and the crook's sons. Director Derek Cianfrance also worked with Gosling on "Blue Valentine" and I admire his ambition, but the film is uneven and overlong. The performances are solid, even if Gosling is not terribly convincing, despite his cheap tattoos, ratty hair, and Metallica shirts, as a low class thief. Cooper is less convincing, but, then again, he kind of always is, while Mendelsohn is great, but, then again, he always is. Ray Liotta, Rose Bryne, and Bruce Greenwood co-star and Mike Patton (Faith No More) did the music. Despite its flaws, it's a strong film that tries to do more with the usual crime and domestic drama themes. The title refers to Schenectady, where the film is set. It has some similarities to "Out of the Furnace" and "Mystic River.'

Unexpected plot line. Carney stunt biker turned bank robber is killed by a cop who feels guilt and "identifies" with the robber's family. Eventually their similarly-age sons encounter one-another and the stinky-stuff hits the fan. Actually a pretty sad flick.

Avery: [Avery just received his medal and is giving a speech] When I was in law school, we used to always talk about justice. We'd have discussions about justice. But that's just what they were, discussions . I joined the police force because I wanted to work alongside the brave men and women who know that some problems can't be solved by talking. And no one wants to be in the situation that I found myself in a couple of weeks ago. I certainly wished it turned out differently. I'm not gonna lie, sometimes I have a wish that sometimes it wasn't me who was called upon that house that day. But that's the job. And I can't think of another line of work I'd rather be in. Thank you.
