"1939. Australia is about to go to war, but in the working-class Melbourne suburb of Richmond, it is business, your own and everyone else's, as usual. And fifteen-year-old Kip Westaway, failed scholar and proud new owner of a lucky shilling, is living the most important day of his life. Over the next seventy years the nine members of the Westaway clan will each experience their own momentous, transformative day. Much more complex than her earlier work, this is a historically-perceptive book where multiple narrators over a range of time periods piece together the story of the photograph on the front cover. Well worth reading.

From our 2015 #80DayRead Summer Reading Club traveler Erin: Great story spanning 3 generations of a family. Each of the 9 chapters/days is written in the perspective of a different family member. An easy and pleasurable read!

Looking forward to reading this book after reading this story behind its inspiration - a real unidentified photo (on the cover) from Melbourne in 1940.

This disappointed me somewhat. Each chapter was a glimpse into the lives of family members immediately prior to WW2 to present day Melbourne, not clearly apparent at first, you needed to look for clues for the connections. I liked the early time period stories best, and the author did well to evoc the time period in which she wrote.
