Parker describes and then surprises us with his characters and their reaction to Spenser's style. He doesn't inundate you with too much detail. The way he describes his encounters with everyone, he's telling you enough about them with just the right amount of good natured banter. Great story teller. Parker's wit in the Spenser novels is fun and edgy. Pastime touched on a lot of social issues. Mother and son love. Father and son love. Smart aleck PI and girlfriend Shrink love. Lots of loyalty and trust too..... even between Spenser and his deadly adversaries. Oh yes Master and his or in this case his girlfriend's dog bonding.

Average plotting for a Spencer book. Paul is not too believable as logic would say he should hate his mother who ignored him as a child and then basically abandoned him to chase after her version of companionship.
