This is the 12th installment of the Zatoichi (座頭市) series directed by Kenji Misumi (三隅研次) in 1965.
With 26 film sequels, Shintaro Katsu (勝新太郎) is the legendary Zatoichi---a low-ranking blind masseur who lives by the Yakuza or gangster code and answers his foes with a deadly cane sword.
This movie concerns a wandering, chess-loving, battle-thirsty samurai called Jumonji (十文字) played by Mikio Narita (成田三樹夫).
This samurai once killed a chess-partner, whose son and daughter are now chasing Jumonji while seeking retribution.
Jumonji helps Zatoichi when he almost drops from a ferry.
Both travel together.
As a subplot, a young girl gets accidently wounded when Zatoichi gets involved in a brutal sword fight.
By buying an expensive medicine, Zatoichi helps the girl who almost dies of tetanus.
Her mother falls in love with Zatoichi although he once killed her husband.
At the end, Zatoichi helps the son and daughter kill Jumonji so that they will be able to restore the disgraced name of their family.
It is entertaining as well as heart-warming.
