For those of us residing in metro Portland, it's important to share that as part of the incredibly fertile Willamette Valley our soils are phenomenal. However, it is also important to share that if a garden is left unamended, the clay will reign supreme and remain indomitable. Let me offer this slice of advice. Amend your clay soil with organic matter such as compost or composted manure. Additionally, add Gypsum to your amended soil to aid in changing the structure of the clay into a much more manageable and friable soil. Clay if left undisturbed will not unleash all its benefits... That's for us savvy gardeners to do!

Interesting idea. I wish I had read this a few years ago as I may have actually tried a vegetable garden. I had absolutely no luck with our clay ground.
