Pulitzer Prize winning author, Mirta Ojito, investigates the hate crime and murder of Marcelo Lucero, an undocumented resident of Patchogue, New York. Ojito scrutinizes the climate that allows teenage boys to go beaner hopping and explores the immigrants and their culture. She also considers the response of community leaders. This is a cautionary tale for the rest of the nation.

Excellent analysis of a hate crime that was committed by teenagers in suburban Long Island. All aspects of the event were covered. Most interesting was the discussion of how the boy who stabbed the Ecuadorian man could have a Latina girlfriend and still go 'beaner hunting" with his pals. Interesting also was the fact that the group included a dark-skinned Latino teen who also was able to distance his own identity from his actions with the group.
