If Blockbuster was still open it would be on the 'hidden gem' shelf. pretty cool but slow moving story of a unique culture where male ego's collide & dilemmas involving science/facts vs. superstition/religion. ( I want a pet Yak!)

This is a 1999 Nepalese movie directed by Eric Vallihas who lived in Nepal since 1983 and is also a photographer and author.
It was the first Nepalese film to be nominated in the Best Foreign Film category at the 72nd Academy Awards.
This film is about the story of villagers who take a caravan of yaks across the mountains, carrying rock salt from the high plateau down to the lowlands to trade for grain.
The caravan provides the grain that the villagers depend on to survive the winter.
A rivalry develops between the aging chief and the young daring herdsman, who is both a friend and a rival to the chief's family.
Both men struggle for leadership of the caravan in the background of a beautiful yet harsh environment of the upper Dolpo people region of the mid western uphills of Nepal.
You can observe their traditional customs like celestrial burial.

Review title: Treacherous Terrain.
*Intense. * Dramatic. *Suspenseful. *Engaging. *Gripping. *Succeed & survive or fail & sure death will come to the protagonists. *Viewers learn the importance of true leadership. *And learn how pride can impact decisions. Allows viewers to observe how pride guides decisions, and viewers receive some insight about respecting other people. **Has many tension-filled moments in this DVD. Some questions to consider: leadership - what type of leadership will viewers observe? And how does it impact the story's outcome.
**Great DVD.
