Yay! Finally a good solid horse story! Tells the story of Estrella a young filly, who when thrown from a ship leads her band of horses to freedom. They encounter many obstacles on the way. Some are external such as crocodiles in the jungle. Some are Internal as some of the older horses want to go back to their masters with saddles and bridles. They bond together over time. I greatly enjoyed the personality of the lead horse, Estrella, however they maintained the sense of her being a horse. In looking at some other reviewers, I guess they they thought this was going to be Bambi as a horse. Please be advised and is not lol. This is what happened when Cortez came to America. The 1500s men came to the "New World" to explore and gather gold. Tells the conquest from an unique horses perspective. Some history, but mainly about their escape to freedom. Spanish words are included, those they immediately translate for you to know what they are saying. This is NOT your typical horse book. They are some "death" scenes, but it fits the setting. It is for boys or girls who like adventure or horses, even though they are not 5 years old. More so for 5/6th grade level, but who maybe don't read very well. Great adventure story thats easy to get into.
