Driving through Lancaster this Spring and seeing this author's books for sale in the Amish farm stores, I became interested in reading Amish fiction to see what Amish values and cultural aspects would be embedded in the story including the dangers of the outside world...the Englisher. I was not disappointed in Lewis's book in providing me with these insights.
I was disappointed, however, in her writing ability. This book needs editing as reading over and over about the Hen's and Brandon's marital problems became tedious. These problems result from Hen's desire to return to her Amish roots leaving behind her husband's English ways in order to raise her daughter as she was raised and are not even resolved in this book. The reader has another 2 novels in this trilogy to finally see how Hen's and Brandon's problem is resolved. That isn't the only problem that is not solved. Rose Ann and her relationship with Silas and Nick is addressed again in the other 2 books in the series. While the author has a worthwhile plot idea, it is the execution of that idea that makes reading this novel a bore.

I never knew I would enjoy reading Amish stories. Beverly Lewis has so many it was hard to chose from, so I decided to start with the Rose trilogy. The story started out a little slow, but I kept reading and it wasn't long before I couldn't put the book down! Such a wonderful story. Can't wait to start the next book in the trilogy.
