Someone forgot to proofread this book (there's a duplicated sentence at the beginning of chapter fifty-something in the copy I got), but with more than sixty chapters you can see why they might have missed something. This is an "intimate history" in that all the usual (I would assume) things are included, but with a little more emphasis on the Queen's ladies. It isn't just about the ladies-in-waiting and maids of honour and suchlike, like I thought it would be. This is something to read if you're interested in the history of this time and are able to keep hundreds of names straight.

Well researched and excellently written account of the reign of Elizabeth I, with the emphasis being less on the Queen herself, but the people around her: courtiers, ladies in waiting, servants of the bedchamber, political advisors etc. Very busy court and ALOT of things going on that I wasn't aware of. Highly recommended for those into British history.
