One of my favorites. Somewhat ridiculous, most parents will relate, and sure to bring a smile to your face. Be warned: This book may also turn you and your children into "Hug Machines", which may lead to a ridiculous fun afternoon of hugging random objects in your house... :)

The book focuses on sheer joyful exuberance as the Hug Machine encounters potential people and animals to hug. Campbell's illustrations are the absolute cutest, as our hug-minded protagonist tackles all creatures great and small.

The little boy in this story is a hug machine. He will hug everyone and anyone. He will hug anything big or small. He hugs all day until he is wiped out and can hug no more. At this point he is happy to receive any hugs that come his way.

The illustrations are done in watercolor. They are fun to look at although not always crisp and easy to view.

This story made me chuckle. I enjoyed watching the antics of this boy who could not get enough hugs into his day. I enjoyed the two page spread where you have to follow his trail to see all of the hugs he gives. I especially love the ending where he is all hugged out. The only thing that concerns me about this book is that it is not always okay to give hugs. There are people and animals that children should be taught NOT to hug. However, if you read this to your child, this is something you can point out along the way. You can laugh at the antics of the hug machine while talking about personal safety.

With his big eyes, striped shirt, and comically long arms, the human Hug Machine is an irresistible little guy -- both to readers and to the recipients of his embraces. Whether they need to be calmed down or cheered up, the Hug Machine is willing to hug anyone (including an unhappy baby, a spiky porcupine, and a giant whale) or anything (such as a rock, a mailbox, and an ice cream truck). But after a big day of hugging, the Hug Machine is tired…and ready to receive a loving squeeze from his mom. The Hug Machine's blend of sweet sincerity and deadpan goofiness is perfect for sharing with cuddle-loving kids.
