Subtitles are a good size, white with no background
Creepy at times but an interesting look into a short portion of 'the German doctors' life.

As in "Boys from Brazil," this film was about the eternal fugitive Dr. Josef Mengele and his victims during one of his hide-out stops in South America. What a twisted monster! Even the spectacular location, Bariloche, Argentina, turned eerily sinister as the film progressed.

An interesting foreign film in both languages: Spanish and German. No action, no nudity. Just a good old story about a WWII fugitive befriending an Argentine family, and constantly in pursuit by Israeli agents.

Loved this. Beautifully shot, great acting, and shines a spotlight on what I would think is a lesser known aspect of WWII/Holocaust history (as well as Argentine history). As a student of both Spanish and German, I also loved the combo of the two languages in this film.

From the beginning this movie had me feeling wary and anxious. I soon realized what the story was going to be and watched through to the end. I almost wish I hadn't, but the acting was so compelling I stayed with it.

The German Doctor is a fictionalized account of Nazi human experimenter Josef Mengele during the time he lived in hiding in Argentina, years after the end of WWII. In fact, like documentaries, this film runs captions of Mengele’s exploits (fiction, not fact) after he escaped from Argentina to points not exactly known (Paraguay, Brazil?). This is a fine film describing what you might endure if you were to accidentally befriend a monster like Mengele. Another film imagining Mengele and his madness is The Boys from Brazil. While The Boys was a great thriller with excellent acting by Gregory Peck and Lawrence Olivier, actually The German Doctor, while more understated, is a more realistic possibility of Mengele’s expoits while hiding in South America.

An ok but unremarkable film that was historically predictable. Even so, interesting for its portrayal of Nazi sympathizers and Hitler Youth wannabes. The actor portraying Mengele could be his twin brother....

Excellent film, well acted and directed. Since it is based on Josef Mengele, and set in the early 60s, the viewer knows going that it isn't likely to have as satisfying an ending as it might otherwise, but a good creepy thriller nevertheless.

Rich in symbolic language throughout. At the end, Mengele continued to experiment on pregnant women, young girls and twins. The young girl's eyes were crystal blue at the end of the movie-like the doll. Mengele was known to experiment with techniques to change eye color. He also developed techniques that caused women to produce twins. It was explained to me in Bio101. One method is to remove 1 ovary. The 1 left, over produced and does not detect when it is pregnant, so it continues to ovulate increasing the chances of fraternal twins. He would enter the young girls reproductive system through the rectum to maintain 'purity'. He would remove an ovary and implant a device that prevented premature delivery. It causes severe infection and pain in the lower region and extreme gastrointestinal distress. I am not sure what was done with the other ovary. If the eggs are not developed, they can not be used. It leaves the women feeling like half female-diminished.

The doll was especially evocative of a prototype with the hole in the top of the skull, artificial crystal blue eyes and a mechanical heart that pumps. A young doll, un-flawed who will grow up to look like Barbie.

The sadistic experimentations-Nazi psychosis-are still being practiced today.

Excellent movie...even if you don't like reading subtitles. Beautifully photographed as well.

Mengele: The new test is first with animals, to be sure that it works.
Eva: And if it does not work?
Mengele: It always works. Genetics and ' a complex science, but is explained very simply. You should try what the geneticists call "founder effect." Finding a model,
clear and hereditary, you can use to improve the breed.
Lilith: What's with the "blood and honor"?
Mengele: Hybridization defiles the blood and destroys the memory.
Lilith: What's up to remember?
Mengele: Who we were.
