Gilbert and Sullivan's classic musical comedy of mistaken identity comes swashbuckling to the screen with all the laughs, songs, and stars that made it a long-running Broadway smash. This spectacular production adds some contemporary flash to the classic farce which follows the adventures of a roguish pirate leader and his young charge through numerous love affairs and sword battles

great movie but this movie was really tacky the ,music, characters, and scenery but it's
worth checking this movie out rex smith ,linda ronstadt, and angela lansbury were great kevin kline as the pirate was amazing. and george rose as the swash buckler was amazing. truly worth seeing this movie out.

🍿Oddly, the trailer for this amusing show that's here on the library website, is in fuzzy black & white. Rest assured the actual movie is in sharp color. The set decoration is stylized and artificial, just like a stage play would be. As a musical, it takes some liberties with Gilbert and Sullivan, even interpolating a song from another operetta. It does contain "Hail, Poetry," though, one of the most beautiful brief choral works ever.

The performers, particularly Kevin Kline as the easily deluded Pirate King, are lively and energetic. George Rose gets a special nod for his race through the Major General's Song. There's a sad tale, poor Rose was murdered by his adopted son and three other guys in some Godforsaken place like the Dominican Republic, only a few years after this movie was released.

At least for the copy that PPL has, the audio was so terrible that we couldn't understand a word, and the video quality was so bad we couldn't tell what was going on. It was filmed on a performance night, so the lights were low and it was filmed from far away. There weren't any closed captions to help us, so we ended up giving up pretty quickly. We'll have to try another version to see if we like the play.

Oh, what a fun film. There are movies that stick with you, and this rendition of Penzance is one of mine.
The overall silliness of this operetta is enjoyable for all ages, the acting is just hammy enough to make you smile, and the skill needed to hit some of these notes and relay the quick pace of some of the lyrics is to be admired.
And it's just fun to see Kevin Kline in a puffed shirt and thigh-high swashbuckling boots.

Thomas, I believe that you inadvertently placed your review with the later version the CPL possesses.

This is the film based on the New York stage production; so, while it surpasses its predecessor in production values, it lacks the fizz of a truly live performance with audience. Great fun, nevertheless.

P.S. If you ever experienced a secret desire to have Frederic and the Pirate King run away together, this will certainly feed that fantasy.

Recorded live at New York's Shakespeare in the Park festival, 1980. Some film aspects are a little shaky, but overall production is excellent, a raucous bumptious romp!

I particularly enjoyed the Modern Major General song - what fun!

Somehow I had never seen any production of Pirates of Penzance. Now I have - thanks KCLS!
